Functionality, harmony and aesthetics correlate. Graphic Design is about marrying function and design, creating a system of design through thoughts, integrating design with technology, and utilizing technology to communicate. We are often mesmerised by the obsession of catching the next wave of technology and gadgetry; we fail to remember that design is not about drop shadows and Photoshop filters, but that a solid concept is the foundation for a good design and the technology is a method of executing the concept.

Times have changed and so has design. Graphic design no longer only consists of two-dimensional graphics on a page. It has bled into various disciplines such as ecological design, cyberspace, social networking and packaging design. In the future, graphic design will continue to merge into other creative areas such as industrial design, music and fashion. We are ascending a digital learning curve, and in this age modern designers need to gain fluency in all creative disciplines in order to continue enhancing design quality through harmony and aesthetics.
